Normalization, tatbee’ in Arabic, means dealing with or presenting something that is inherently abnormal, such as oppression and injustice, as if it were normal. Normalization with/of Israel is, then, the idea of making occupation, apartheid, and settler colonialism seem normal and establishing normal relations with the Israeli regime instead of supporting the struggle led by the Indigenous Palestinian people to end the abnormal conditions and structures of oppression. A key principle underpinning anti-normalization work is that it is a tactic entirely based on ethical and political considerations which are in perfect harmony with the BDS movement’s rejection of all forms of racism and racial discrimination. Countering normalization is a means to resist oppression, its mechanisms and structures.

Omar Barghouti is a Palestinian human rights defender and co-founder of the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement for Palestinian rights. He is a co-recipient of the 2017 Gandhi Peace Award. He holds a B.Sc. and an M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University, NY, and is pursuing a PhD in Philosophy (ethics) at the University of Amsterdam. He is the author of, BDS:The Global Struggle for Palestinian Rights (Haymarket: 2011). His commentaries and views have appeared in the New York Times, the Guardian, the Washington Post, the Financial Times, the Nation, and on MSNBC, CNN, BBC, among others.

Supporting Speaker: Tali Shapiro, Boycott from Within

Boycott from Within is a group of Israeli human rights defenders supporting the Palestinian BDS movement. We resist the Zionist Settler-colonial project, the denial of indigenous Palestinian rights, including the right for self-determination. We are committed to act together with other such groups and under the leadership of he Palestinian BDS National Committee (BNC), to end Israel’s apartheid, military occupation, and ethnic cleansing.

Tali Shapiro (she/her) is a feminist, queer, vegan activist in the Israeli group Boycott from Within. She’s been active in local and international solidarity groups, Anarchists Against the Wall and the International Solidarity Movement. She focuses on cultural boycott campaigns of Israel and researches how Israel’s cultural industry normalizes and profits from Israel’s colonialism. Her latest project contextualizes Israel’s colonialism within the framework of the crime of genocide against the indigenous Palestinian people.
